Presidential aspirant of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Engr. (Dr.) Yakubu Mohammed Kingsley, has called on politicians seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to focus their campaigns on policies and solutions rather than personal attacks, ethnic divisions and hate speech.
In a statement issued in Abuja following the release of the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the aspirant described the election season as an opportunity for Nigerians to redefine the country’s future through issue-based campaigns and responsible political engagement.
According to him, the commencement of the electoral process should inspire candidates to present practical ideas capable of addressing Nigeria’s security, economic and governance challenges rather than engaging in abusive rhetoric.
“This election season presents Nigeria with a historic opportunity—not merely to change governments, but to redefine our national direction,” he said.
“It is therefore imperative that we rise above the politics of division and embrace the politics of ideas, competence, integrity and national development.”
The PRP presidential hopeful urged all presidential, governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly aspirants, regardless of political affiliation, to conduct peaceful, mature and issue-driven campaigns.
“The era of abusive language, character assassination, ethnic profiling, religious manipulation, fake news, hate speech and politics of bitterness must come to an end. Nigeria has suffered enough,” he stated.
He added that Nigerians were more interested in workable policies than political exchanges.
“Our people are not interested in endless exchanges of insults. They are not interested in propaganda. They are not interested in empty promises or political entertainment. What Nigerians desire today are practical solutions to the enormous challenges confronting our nation.”
Kingsley challenged political candidates to explain their plans for improving the economy, strengthening security, creating jobs, stabilising the naira, improving electricity supply, reforming education and healthcare, combating corruption and promoting national unity.
“The Nigerian electorate deserves nothing less,” he said.
Reflecting on the country’s challenges, the PRP aspirant said Nigeria’s current economic and security situation was the result of decades of policy inconsistency, weak governance, corruption and poor planning.
He noted that insecurity had evolved from isolated communal conflicts into terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, piracy and other violent crimes, with severe consequences for citizens and businesses.
“Our nation’s present predicament did not emerge overnight,” he said.
“The insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, infrastructural decay and institutional weaknesses confronting Nigeria today are cumulative consequences of decades of policy inconsistency, weak governance, corruption, poor planning and failure of leadership across successive administrations.”
He further lamented the rising cost of living, inflation, unemployment and declining purchasing power, saying many Nigerians were struggling to meet basic needs.
Addressing citizens directly, YMK expressed solidarity with families facing hardship across the country.
“To every mother struggling to feed her children; to every father wondering how to pay school fees; to every graduate searching endlessly for employment; to every entrepreneur whose business is collapsing; to every farmer unable to access his farmland; and to every family that has lost loved ones to insecurity—I share your pains. I understand your frustrations.”
Despite the challenges he advised, “Do not lose hope. Nigeria can rise again. Our greatest asset is not crude oil. It is not our mineral resources. It is the resilience, intelligence, creativity and determination of the Nigerian people.”
Presenting what he described as the “YMK Nigeria Project,” the presidential aspirant outlined his policy priorities, including comprehensive security sector reforms, economic recovery, industrialisation, agricultural development, power sector transformation, youth employment, education, healthcare, infrastructure and good governance.
On security, he promised reforms centred on improved intelligence gathering, better coordination among security agencies, modern technology, enhanced welfare for security personnel, stronger border management and community policing.
“We shall comprehensively reform our security architecture. Security shall become proactive rather than reactive,” he said.
On the economy, he pledged to restore investor confidence, strengthen fiscal discipline, promote local production and encourage value addition across productive sectors.
“We shall stabilise the macroeconomic environment, restore investor confidence, strengthen fiscal discipline, encourage local production and promote value addition across all sectors of the economy.”
He also pledged to pursue rapid industrialisation through investments in manufacturing, mining, petrochemicals, steel production, gas development, agro-processing and technology-driven industries, while expanding mechanised agriculture and agro-industrial value chains to improve food security.
Speaking on electricity, he said reliable power remained central to industrial growth and pledged reforms aimed at expanding electricity generation, transmission and distribution through a combination of gas, hydro, solar and other renewable energy sources.
“Affordable and stable electricity will unlock manufacturing, support small businesses and improve the quality of life for millions of Nigerians,” he said.
YMK further promised to create sustainable jobs through industrial expansion, entrepreneurship support, digital innovation, vocational education and infrastructure development.
“Our young people deserve opportunities—not despair,” he added.
He also promised to prioritise education and healthcare, strengthen public institutions, improve infrastructure and ensure transparency and accountability in governance.
“Government shall become transparent, accountable, efficient and citizen-focused. Public resources shall work for the people. Institutions shall be strengthened above personalities.”
Calling for national unity, the PRP aspirant urged Nigerians to reject divisions based on ethnicity and religion.
“Our diversity should never divide us. Our religions should inspire peace. Our ethnic identities should enrich our national unity. We are stronger together.”
He also appealed to young Nigerians to reject violence, political thuggery, vote-buying and manipulation during the electioneering period.
“Choose ideas. Choose competence. Choose integrity,” he said.
YMK equally encouraged eligible Nigerians to obtain or update their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) to enable them to participate in the electoral process.
“Democracy belongs to those who participate. Every vote matters. Every citizen matters. Every Nigerian has a role to play in building the country we all desire.”
