46 State Creation Requests, 117 New LGAs Proposed — House Constitution Review Committee Reveals Nationwide Submissions

The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution has revealed that it received 46 formal requests for the creation of new states and 117 proposals for new local government areas (LGAs) from interest groups across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

This was disclosed in a document made available by the committee, which is currently considering inputs for constitutional amendments to address issues of governance, equity, and representation.

The list, which spans the North East, North West, North Central, South East, and South South regions, reflects renewed agitation for political restructuring and grassroots development across the country.

Below is the full list of proposed new states as submitted:

Pending Submissions from South West

The committee did not list any state creation proposals from the South West zone in the released document.

The House Committee has assured Nigerians that all requests will be subjected to due legislative and constitutional scrutiny, in line with provisions for state creation under Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
