Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have repelled an attack by suspected armed bandits on Jebbu Miango community in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, leaving a 74-year-old civilian dead.
The attack occurred at about 12:10 a.m. on Sunday, June 29, when troops of Sector 3 responded to reports of gunfire by suspected armed bandits in the community.
The incident was reported by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert covering the Lake Chad region.
The troops moved to the area and engaged the attackers in a gunfight, forcing them to retreat into the surrounding highlands after they were overpowered.
A search of the community after the attackers withdrew led to the discovery of the body of a 74-year-old resident, identified as Mr Baba Den, who was believed to have been killed during the attack.

Troops immediately reinforced their presence around the attacked area and intensified patrols to prevent the attackers from regrouping and carrying out further attacks on the community.
The military said the security situation in the area remained under control, adding that efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing assailants.
Residents were urged to remain calm and continue providing credible information to security agencies to support ongoing operations.
