The Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Environment, Newmap, and Urban Renewal, led by Hon. Nwoke Kalu Mba, visited erosion sites in Umuahia North State Constituency.
The visit followed a matter of urgent public importance raised by Hon. Anderson Akaliro, representing Umuahia North State Constituency, regarding the severe damage caused by erosion in his constituency.
Some of the communities visited includes Umu-Nkpu Ofeme, Oriendu Ubaha Umuezike, Umurum Umu-Ugba Ekeoba , Elugwu Umu-Ugba Ekeoba, Nkwo Egwu market, Umuakam and Chief Mba Onwuasoanya Okpu Isingwu House
Residents and stakeholders expressed gratitude for the committee’s visit and appealed for urgent government intervention.

Similarly, Mr. Baron Ogbonna, speaking on behalf of traders at Nkwo Egwu market, commended the committee for visiting the erosion site and urged them to expedite efforts to ensure the state government commences palliative work without further delay.
“Many buildings have been affected by the erosion already, and we fear for our safety,” he said.

Chief Mba Onwuasoanya, whose house is threatened by erosion, appealed for quick intervention, stating that he has spent a huge amount of money on prevention efforts, which have been unsuccessful.
“I have spent over 10 years fighting to save my house, and I’m at a loss. I beg the government to please help me,” he pleaded.
Responding to the pleas, Hon. Nwoke Kalu Mba assured the affected communities that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, will carefully consider their demands and take necessary actions.
“We are here to assess the situation and provide recommendations for urgent intervention. We will ensure that the government takes the necessary steps to address this menace,” he said.
Hon. Anderson Akaliro, who brought the matter to the floor of the House, thanked the committee members for their prompt response and expressed confidence that the state government will take the necessary steps to address the erosion menace.
“I’m grateful to my colleagues for their support, and I’m confident that the government will do the needful. We will ensure that our people are protected and their properties preserved,” he said.
