Abia Community Petitions Assembly, Rejects Unauthorised Name Change

The Abia community, Ubakala Autonomous Community, has petitioned the state assembly, rejecting what it called an illegal and clandestine change of name to Amaigbo Autonomous Community.

In a bid to address the concerns of constituents, the Abia State House of Assembly on Tuesday took steps to investigate the circumstances that led to the change of name.

The assembly on Tuesday agreed to carry out an investigation following a petition presented by the Chief Whip, Hon. Emeka Obioma, on behalf of his constituents in Ubakala Autonomous Community.

According to Hon. Obioma, the petitioners are seeking to have the name change declared null and void, citing a lack of consultation and transparency in the process.

“We are committed to ensuring that the rights and interests of our constituents are protected and respected.

“We will work tirelessly to ensure that this matter is thoroughly investigated and resolved in a fair and just manner,” Hon. Obioma said.

The petition was committed to the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, which has been given three weeks to investigate the matter and report back to the House.

Furthermore, several bills passed through the second reading, including the Abia State Primary and Secondary School Reform Bill, 2024, sponsored by Hon. Anthony Chinasa Abiola (Umuahia Central), which was passed into law.

The new law is deemed to have come into force from June 3, when assented to by the Governor.

“The passage of this bill into law is a significant milestone in our efforts to improve the quality of education in Abia State.

“We believe that this law will help to address some of the challenges facing our education sector and provide a better future for our children,” Hon. Abiola said.

The other bills that passed their second reading include the Abia State Maternal and Newborn Child Welfare and Health Care Service Bill, 2025, and the Abia State Cooperative Social Responsibility Agency Bill, 2025, both sponsored by Hon. Erondu Uchenna (Obingwa West).

These bills were committed to various committees for further legislative action.

In a lighter vein, the Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon. Augustine Okezie (Umuahia East), reported on the Novelty match between the Legislature and the Executive, which ended 2:1 in favour of the Legislature.

“We are proud of our team’s victory. It was a great display of teamwork and sportsmanship,” he said.

The House has adjourned its plenary session to June 10, 2025.
