The Abia State government has launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem, marking the commencement of activities for the annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The ceremony, held at the Aguiyi Ironsi Conference Center, Umuahia, was performed by the acting Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Emmanuel Meribole.
Speaking at the event, Dr Meribole called on citizens to reflect on the significance of the occasion by honoring the bravery and supreme sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes.
He emphasized that the emblem symbolizes a collective duty to uphold peace, unity, and national cohesion.
Meribole reaffirmed the commitment of the Dr. Alex Otti-led administration to the welfare of security personnel and to sustaining peace and security in the state. According to him, the government will continue to work closely with security agencies, traditional rulers, faith-based institutions, and community leaders to safeguard lives and property across Abia.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the SSG, Dr. Godwin Okezue, in his welcome address, described the launch as a moment to remember the unwavering courage of the men and women who defended the nation’s sovereignty.
He called for collective support and participation in the events leading to the Remembrance Day.
In a vote of thanks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander MacDonald Uba (Rtd), appreciated all stakeholders and attendees for their contributions to the success of the event.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Abia State Chapter, Lt. Col. Stanley Odionyenfe (Rtd), represented by Chief Okereke Samuel, urged the public to support the Armed Forces Remembrance activities and honor those who served.
Highlights of the event included the decoration of the SSG’s representative and other dignitaries with the remembrance emblem.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of security agencies, government officials, traditional leaders, and members of the public.
