Airline Suspends Staff Over Alleged Passenger Maltreatment

United Nigeria Airlines has suspended a staff member over allegations of maltreatment involving a passenger with reduced mobility, Ms. Doris Akonanya, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday during check-in for Flight UN0526 from Abuja to Yenagoa, where the staff member was accused of unprofessional conduct in handling the passenger’s condition, raising concerns over the treatment of vulnerable travellers.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the airline’s Public Relations Officer, Chibuike Uloka, confirmed that the employee would remain suspended pending the outcome of a full investigation. The airline, however, did not disclose the identity of the staff member.

Uloka stated that the airline operates a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct, discrimination, or abuse, stressing that the safety, dignity, and well-being of all passengers remain a top priority.

“We take this matter very seriously. We are firmly committed to providing safe, respectful, and accessible travel for all, particularly passengers with reduced mobility who require additional care and support,” the statement read.

The airline also extended a public apology to Ms. Akonanya and her family, acknowledging the emotional distress caused by the incident, which it described as regrettable and inconsistent with its service standards.

According to Uloka, the airline has maintained direct communication with the passenger and her family and is working with relevant stakeholders to establish the full details of the case. He added that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken upon the conclusion of investigations.
