The Anambra State Police Command, through its Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), will on Thursday organise a public awareness walk against cultism and other social vices in the state.
The walk, scheduled to commence at 7 a.m. from Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, is aimed at sensitising residents, particularly youths, on the dangers of cultism, drug abuse, violent crimes and related social vices.
According to the police, the initiative forms part of the Inspector-General of Police’s broader efforts to promote peace, security and moral reorientation through community-based, non-kinetic strategies.
The event is expected to draw participation from security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth organisations, students, civil society groups, commercial transport unions including tricycle and bus operators, as well as other stakeholders committed to tackling cult-related activities in the state.
Speaking ahead of the event, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, said the POCACOV initiative prioritises engagement, advocacy and partnership with communities as a sustainable approach to crime prevention.
He noted that addressing the root causes of cultism and other social vices requires collective responsibility and active community involvement rather than reliance on enforcement alone.
The police command urged members of the public to participate in the walk, stressing that collective action remains critical to reducing cultism and promoting lasting peace and development in Anambra State.
