Amedspor confirmed Sor’s arrival on Monday via an exciting video through its official social media platforms, welcoming the 26-year-old winger as he brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding his future at Genk
Super Eagles winger Yira Sor has completed his move to newly promoted Turkish Super Lig side Amedspor from Belgian Pro League club Genk, becoming the second Nigerian international to join the club this summer.
Sor had been expected to leave the Belgian club this summer after a difficult spell that was repeatedly disrupted by injuries.
The Nigerian joined Genk from Slavia Prague in January 2023 but struggled to establish himself consistently during his three-and-a-half-year stay in Belgium, with injury setbacks limiting his opportunities.
His move to Amedspor now offers Sor a fresh start as the newly promoted side prepares for its maiden campaign in the Turkish top flight.
The winger made his Super Eagles debut in March and will be hoping that regular football in Turkey can help him regain his best form and strengthen his position within the national team setup.
Sor’s arrival means Amedspor will have two Nigerian attackers in their squad ahead of the club’s historic Super Lig campaign.
He will link up with fellow Super Eagles forward Gift Orban, who recently joined Amedspor on a season-long loan from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim.
Orban’s agreement includes an obligation for Amedspor to make the transfer permanent if the stipulated conditions are met.
The move brought an end to a period of uncertainty surrounding the striker, who had fallen out of favour at Hoffenheim following a loan spell at Italian club Hellas Verona.
Orban scored seven goals and provided three assists in 29 Serie A appearances for Verona last season, although his individual contribution could not prevent the club from suffering relegation.
His move to Amedspor gives him another opportunity to revive his career, while Sor will also be looking to make a strong impression in Turkey after an injury-hit period at Genk.
The arrivals of Sor and Orban provide Amedspor with a double dose of Nigerian attacking talent as the club prepares to compete in the Super Lig for the first time in its history.
Both players will be expected to play important roles as Amedspor attempt to establish themselves among Turkey’s top-flight clubs following their promotion.
Their moves also add to the growing number of Nigerian players heading to Turkey this summer, with Kelechi Iheanacho among the latest to make the switch after joining Turkish second-tier club Bursaspor.
For Sor, however, the immediate priority will be to stay fit, rediscover his form and make the most of a fresh opportunity with Amedspor as he looks to build on his Super Eagles breakthrough.
