Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi made a flying start to his first full appearance for Coventry City, scoring once and providing an assist as the Sky Blues defeated Plymouth Argyle 4-2 in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
The Nigerian striker quickly turned creator two minutes later as Coventry doubled their advantage, setting up Jack Rudoni with a well-weighted assist. Rudoni made no mistake, finding the bottom-right corner with a left-footed effort from the right side of the box.
Plymouth Argyle got one back on the 21st minute through Oliver Irow on loan from Tottenham hotspur, going into the break one down.
The second half started on same note with the home side managing to draw level 9 minutes into the half with a fine finish from Xavier Amaechi who dribbled through and slotted in the leveler beautifully, but the joy was short lived.
As the Sky Blues turned up the heat immediately after been stung to action, with Ephron Mason-Clark in the 67th minute and Victor Torp in the 78th minute adding further goals to complete a convincing 4-2 victory and book Coventry’s place in the next round of the competition.
Awoniyi’s evening ended with 20 minutes remaining when he was replaced by fellow summer arrival Sidiki Cherif.
The performance marked a significant step forward for the former Union Berlin striker, who joined Coventry during the current summer transfer window.
The Nigerian made his Coventry debut in their opening Premier League fixture against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, coming off the bench with 20 minutes remaining in a 3-0 defeat to the reigning champions.
He replaced former Everton forward Ellis Reco Simms in that encounter but was handed his first start against Plymouth, taking full advantage of the opportunity.
