The Kano State Government is set to explore collaboration with Certis Africa, a waste management company, on innovative and sustainable approaches to managing solid waste generated within the state’s metropolis.
The state Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, disclosed this on Thursday while receiving a delegation from Certis Africa.
In a statement issued by the ministry’s management in Kano on Friday, the commissioner said the government was exploring innovative and sustainable approaches to solid waste management as part of its broader efforts to address environmental challenges and improve the wellbeing of residents.
According to the statement, the company presented its proposed waste management model, which involves commencing a pilot project in a cluster within one of the densely populated communities in the state.
The proposal is based on a circular economy approach, under which waste would be sorted, processed and recycled into useful materials.
The initiative, according to the company’s presentation, could create employment opportunities and stimulate other economic activities, while also contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.
“The Commissioner expressed satisfaction with the presentation and welcomed the idea. He assured the delegation of the Kano State Government’s willingness to explore opportunities that would support the development of an improved and sustainable waste management system in the state,” the statement quoted Hashim as saying.
He said the state government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, remained committed to finding practical and effective solutions to environmental challenges, particularly the growing problem of solid waste management within the metropolis.
The commissioner also emphasised the need for sustainable interventions that would address waste management while generating economic opportunities for residents.
Those in attendance at the meeting included the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, the Managing Director of the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board, REMASAB, representatives of Certis Africa and relevant directors of the ministry, among others.
The meeting ended with an agreement to further explore the proposal and identify areas of possible collaboration towards improving solid waste management in Kano State.
