A lawyer and human rights activist, Victor Giwa, has called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate his allegation that the office of the Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has been compromised in relation to his ongoing forgery trial before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie.
According to Giwa, the office of the Chief Judge has allegedly been influenced by one Asabe Waziri, a staff member of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
In an affidavit attached to a motion on notice dated October 27, 2025, seeking the recusal of Justice Onwuegbuzie from his trial, Giwa claimed that he stands no chance of receiving a fair hearing before the court.
Giwa and one Bukola Ibitade are currently standing trial over allegations of forgery and impersonation. The police had accused Giwa of forging the letterhead of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Awa Kalu.
However, Chief Kalu, in a letter to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, denied ever making such a complaint or alleging any forgery. In the letter dated May 30, 2025, Kalu clarified that his firm’s letterhead was never forged and that he had never lodged any complaint with the police against Giwa or Ibitade.
Despite Kalu’s written clarification, the police proceeded to press charges against Giwa and Ibitade.
In his affidavit supporting motion number M/13799/205, Giwa alleged that Asabe Waziri enjoys the backing of certain individuals within the office of the FCT Chief Judge.
He deposed: “I know as a fact that Asabe Waziri is fully supported by persons in the Office of the Chief Judge of the FCT and enjoys favour with respect to her cases in court.
“I have made efforts and sent emissaries to the office of the Chief Judge with the knowledge that the office is against me. I have no chance of getting justice before this Honourable Court as the outcome is predetermined. Asabe Waziri has repeatedly boasted that the court has been arranged to secure my conviction and use it as a basis to withdraw my practice licence.”
Giwa further urged the DSS and the CJN, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, to investigate his claims, adding that he is willing to undergo a polygraph test to prove the truth of his assertions.
He also alleged that during a previous attempt at settlement, Asabe Waziri was represented by the Director of the Enforcement Unit of the FCT High Court, who demanded ₦800 million on her behalf to stop their arraignment before Justice Bature and arrange a meeting with Joe Agi, SAN. Giwa attached what he described as a handwritten settlement demand list as Exhibit O.
He concluded that Waziri “enjoys full support from the Office of the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court and its staff,” maintaining that his deposition was made in good faith and in accordance with the Oaths Act, 2004.
