Court Rejects Police Bid To Stop Protest For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected an attempt by the Nigeria Police Force to block the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest scheduled for Monday, October 20.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, had filed an ex parte motion seeking an urgent order to restrain activist Omoyele Sowore and others from proceeding with the protest targeted at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

However, Justice Mohammed Umar declined to grant the request, ruling that the police must first serve Sowore with notice of the application before any order could be considered.

The case was adjourned until Tuesday, a day after the planned protest, for a proper hearing.

The court’s decision clears the way for the protest to go ahead as scheduled.

In his reaction, Sowore hailed the judgement, reaffirming that the demonstration would proceed peacefully and lawfully.

“The IGP sent police lawyers to stop the Free Nnamdi Kanu Now protest, but Justice Umar refused their ex parte request and adjourned for Tuesday after the protest,” Sowore posted on X on Friday.

The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest seeks to draw attention to the prolonged detention of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in custody since June 2021.
