Meanwhile, the family and friends of Mr. Precious Okocha from Delta State have equally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, calling for a thorough and independent investigation into what they described as incessant attacks and police bias in an ongoing criminal matter involving Mr. Augustine Ifedishu, also known as “AC Bless,” and his alleged accomplices.
Okocha’s family in a petition through their lawyer, Mr. Arinze Ojimba of Law Grits Attorney, urged the IGP to set up a special inquiry team to harmonise all case files and ensure a fair investigation.
They also demanded the immediate release of Mr. Okocha, who they said is the nominal complainant in the matter but is currently being detained by the police on what they described as ‘trumped-up allegations’.
The petition, titled “Petition for harmonization of case files and independent investigation into the matter between Precious Okocha and others and Mr. Augustine Ifedishu (a.k.a AC Bless) and cohorts,” accused operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of turning the complainant into a suspect.
The family further alleged that personnel of the IGP Monitoring Unit were frustrating the investigation and aiding the suspects, leading to Okocha’s arrest and detention.
“This development is not only a manifest abuse of police process but also an affront to fairness, impartiality, and the constitutional role of the Police as protectors of law and order,” the petition reads in part.
The family called on the IGP to among others “harmonise all case files currently before IRT, IGP Monitoring Unit, X-Squad Asaba, and Zone 5 Benin City.
“Transfer the case to an independent and neutral police unit under his direct supervision.
“Review Okocha’s continued detention and release him pending the outcome of a unified investigation.
“Investigate and sanction any officers found to have compromised the process.”
They also described the situation as “legally untenable,” stressing that the same parties cannot simultaneously act as complainants and defendants in different police formations over the same matter.
