Don’t Allow Yourself Be Used For 2027, Group Warns Jonathan

The South-South Reawakening Group (SSRG) has warned former President Goodluck Jonathan to tread cautiously over the renewed calls for him to join the 2027 presidential race, saying those urging his comeback are the same forces that once despised and worked against him.

Speaking on Wednesday, the convener of SSRG, Dr Joseph Ambakaderimo, said the sudden wave of support for Jonathan is “a grand plot” that could ultimately lead to his political downfall if he yields to the pressure.

“Go back to history; you will see that these are the same people who hated Jonathan with passion when he served as president. They said he was weak; he was incapable of securing Nigeria from Boko Haram terrorists. So, what has suddenly changed now?” Ambakaderimo asked.

According to him, six associations across the Niger Delta recently met to review the calls, particularly from some northern elements, for Jonathan to return to power and concluded that “those behind the scheme are Nigeria’s enemies”.

He argued that Jonathan’s so-called new allies were only attempting to use him to destabilise the South ahead of 2027.

“There is a grand plan to scatter the southern votes by drafting in as many candidates as possible from the South, while the North rallies around a single dominant candidate.

“If Jonathan falls for this trick, he may only end up weakening the incumbent, President Bola Tinubu, and paving the way for power to return to the North through the back door,” he warned.

Ambakaderimo further noted that the real motive remains unclear since Jonathan himself has not openly declared his intention.

“Until he speaks, we will continue to watch this game with rapt attention,” he said.

His caution comes days after a pro-Jonathan group, Bring Back Our Goodluck, in Kano, urged the former president to contest, claiming Nigerians were “misled in 2015” when they voted him out of office.
