DSS Medical Facility Adequate For Nnamdi Kanu, Court Rules

Gives IPOB Leader Six Days To Close Defence

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the Department of State Services (DSS) medical facility can adequately cater to the health needs of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Justice James Omotosho upheld the findings of a medical panel constituted by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), which confirmed that Kanu’s health condition is not life-threatening and that he is fit to stand trial.

Kanu is currently facing trial on terrorism-related charges filed against him by the Federal Government.

The panel’s report, submitted to the court on October 13 by the prosecution team led by Adegboyega Awomolo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, followed a previous order by the court directing an independent assessment after conflicting reports from doctors representing both the prosecution and the defence.

With no objections raised by either party, the judge ruled that the trial should proceed and granted Kanu six consecutive days, beginning October 23, to present his defence.

The court further directed that he must close his defence by October 30, 2025.

In addition, Justice Omotosho approved a request by Kanu’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, for a private consultation between Kanu and his legal team outside the DSS premises.

The judge ordered that the meeting take place in the courtroom on October 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, with only Kanu and his lawyers in attendance.
