The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, has died at the age of 86.
The monarch died in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, September 3, 2026, according to a condolence message issued by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Pantami.
Sani II ascended the throne on December 16, 1980, and remained Emir of Gumel until his death, bringing his reign to nearly 46 years.
Pantami, while mourning the monarch, described him as a respected scholar and a father figure who devoted his reign to the welfare of his people.
He said the late emir made significant contributions to peacebuilding, education and the preservation of the cultural heritage of the Gumel Emirate.
“On behalf of myself and my family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late Emir, the Gumel Emirate Council, His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, CFR, the Government and good people of Jigawa State, and the entire nation,” Pantami said.
He prayed for the repose of the deceased monarch’s soul and asked God to grant the royal family, the people of Gumel and residents of Jigawa State the strength to cope with the loss.
