The National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEWS CENTER) has predicted heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding in only two states, Ekiti and Osun, between October 19th and 23rd, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, the affected areas in Ekiti State are Ado-Ekiti and Ijero-Ekiti, while in Osun State, the risk is limited to Ilesa.
The Director of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, urged relevant stakeholders to take note of the prediction and take necessary precautions.
In an interview with NEWSNGR, the Deputy Director, Flood Forecasting, Monitoring and Control at FEWS, Kunle Awojemila, explained that the automated model designed to analyse potential flooding in the country only flagged these two states, adding that the rains are receding, signifying the end of the rainy season and most flood events.
Awojemila noted that isolated flood events may still occur, but the risk is significantly reduced.
“ It’s only these two states that were flagged by the automated model designed to analyse potential flooding in the country. Equally, you will notice that the rains are receding, which signifies the end of the rainy season and with it most flood events. This is not to say you may not have one or two isolated events,” he said.
The centre urged feedback from stakeholders and State Government representatives to enhance its flood management efforts.
The FEWS CENTER is a department under the Federal Ministry of Environment, Abuja, responsible for providing early warnings and predictions to mitigate the impact of flooding in Nigeria.
