FCT Fire Service Saves 69 Lives, N14.4bn Properties In Nine Months

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service has disclosed that it saved 69 human lives and rescued property valued at ₦14,466,915,000 from various fire incidents across the territory between January and September 2025.

This was revealed in a Fire and Rescue Statistics report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by the Service’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Mohammad, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Mohammad explained that despite the commendable rescue efforts, the Service also recorded the loss of 18 human lives and property valued at ₦6,072,214,500 during the same period.

He said the data highlighted the intensity of fire emergencies handled within the nation’s capital, stressing that the Service remained proactive in response and prevention efforts across all six area councils.

According to the report, the Service recorded life-saving operations during the nine-month period, with March witnessing the highest number of rescues at 30, followed by June with 22, April with 13, and July with four. No loss of life was recorded in January, February, May, August, and September.

However, the Service noted that March and April were particularly tragic months, as ten and eight persons respectively lost their lives to fire outbreaks, while the remaining months recorded no fatalities.

The statistics further showed that a total of 338 fire calls were received between January and September.

February recorded the highest number of fire incidents with 64 calls, followed by January with 59, April with 51, June with 35, March with 33, May with 31, July with 24, August with 21, and September with 20.

Also, the Service responded to nine rescue calls within the period under review, further demonstrating its operational readiness in addressing emergencies beyond fire incidents.

Mohammad reiterated the Service’s commitment to reducing fire-related casualties and property losses through public enlightenment, swift emergency response, and improved inter-agency coordination.

He also appealed to residents to adopt safety consciousness in their homes, markets, and workplaces, particularly as the dry season approaches—a period often associated with increased fire risk.

The FCT Fire Service, he said, continues to intensify awareness campaigns on fire prevention, proper handling of electrical appliances, and adherence to safety standards in residential and commercial buildings to avert avoidable disasters.
