The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Environment has approved a four-month intensive training programme in Mechatronics Engineering for 100 Ogoni youths, a landmark capacity-building initiative being implemented through the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) at the University of Port Harcourt’s Offshore Technology Institute.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Owunari Georgewill, made this known during the flag-off ceremony of the programme, where he commended President Tinubu for what he described as a forward-looking and transformative intervention.
According to him, the initiative represents a strategic investment by the Federal Government in developing advanced technical skills among Ogoni youths, positioning them for relevance in the fast-evolving global technology space.
Professor Georgewill highlighted the growing importance of Mechatronics in modern manufacturing, automation, and engineering solutions, noting that the discipline sits at the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and electronic engineering.
He urged the selected beneficiaries to approach the training with discipline, commitment, and intellectual curiosity, stressing that the skills they would acquire are globally competitive and economically empowering.
He also lauded the HYPREP Project Coordinator, Professor Nenibari Zabbey, for diligently implementing the project in line with the President’s Renewed Hope vision.
In his keynote address, the HYPREP Project Coordinator, Professor Zabbey, who was represented by the Director of Technical Services, Professor Damian Aguiyi, expressed satisfaction over the commencement of the programme, describing it as the fulfilment of a long-standing goal to equip Ogoni youths with high-end, marketable skills.
He explained that the University of Port Harcourt was deliberately selected to deliver the programme in order to combine strong academic foundations with practical, industry-driven training.
Professor Zabbey noted that the world is rapidly advancing in innovation, technology, digital transformation, and leadership, adding that HYPREP is committed to ensuring that Ogoni youths are not left behind.
He said the choice of a competent contractor and a reputable academic institution reflects the project’s resolve to deliver quality and sustainable outcomes for the beneficiaries.
The Managing Director of Competent Samco Technical Nigeria Limited, Mr. Samuel Makozi, outlined the structure of the training, explaining that participants would be exposed to mechanical, electrical, and electronic components of Mechatronics through a blend of classroom lectures and hands-on practical sessions.
He added that while the programme will begin at the Offshore Technology Institute, participants will later proceed to the Trans-Amadi Industrial Area for industrial-based practical experience.
In a goodwill message, His Royal Highness, Mene Kardilo Kabari, expressed appreciation to HYPREP for providing Ogoni youths with access to world-class instructors and facilities.
He urged the trainees to make the most of the opportunity by remaining focused and committed, noting that the programme has the potential to transform their lives and communities.
The Mechatronics training programme aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises youth empowerment, skills acquisition, and sustainable development.
Through HYPREP, the initiative is expected to enhance employability, promote self-reliance among Ogoni youths, and contribute to long-term socio-economic development in the region.
