The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reaffirmed that every step taken in establishing and endorsing the party as a coalition platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections is firmly grounded in sound legal principles.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday in Abuja, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, stressed that the ADC’s foundation rests on a strong legal framework designed to ensure stability and democratic processes within the coalition.
Since the ADC was launched as a coalition party on July 1, concerns have emerged over potential internal conflicts, especially regarding the management of the presidential ambitions of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former APC aspirant Rotimi Amaechi.
Addressing these concerns, Abdullahi made it clear that the ADC will not endorse any preselected aspirant or anointed candidate ahead of its primaries.
“We have no hidden agenda or preferred candidate. The party will ensure a level playing field and a transparent process for selecting our flagbearer,” he said.
Abdullahi further noted that while supporters of various aspirants may express loyalty to their favored candidates, none of the aspirants themselves have declared exclusivity or disengagement from the coalition.
“It’s democracy. We are committed to strict internal democracy. Anyone with a preferred candidate should join ADC and vote when the time comes,” he added.
Regarding potential legal challenges from opponents, Abdullahi expressed confidence in the party’s preparedness and legal compliance.
“We are not aware of any encumbrance that could destabilize the party. Some individuals may have gone to court, but we believe they lack correct information. We took deliberate time to close legal loopholes to avoid interference from the ruling APC, which has a history of undermining opposition parties,” Abdullahi concluded.
