An aircraft operated by Skypower Express crashed at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State, on Tuesday evening with four persons onboard.
The aircraft, a Cessna 172 registered 5N-ASR, was reportedly involved in the incident while attempting to land at Owerri Airport.
According to preliminary details, the aircraft had departed Kaduna International Airport and was en route to Port Harcourt International Airport before the crew declared an emergency mid-flight.
Following the emergency declaration, the pilot diverted the aircraft to Owerri in an attempt to make an emergency landing.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the incident through its Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji.
Mrs. Oladeji said the agency had been formally notified of the crash and had commenced the necessary procedures in line with aviation safety protocols.
She disclosed that the aircraft crashed in the approach area of Runway 17 at the airport.
The NSIB further stated that no fatalities had been recorded as a result of the incident as of the time of reporting.
Also confirming the crash, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Airport Command, Lagos, ASP Mohammed Adeola, said the aircraft sustained varying degrees of damage.
Adeola revealed that four crew members were onboard the aircraft at the time of the occurrence and were successfully rescued.
He added that two of the crew members were reported to be in stable condition following the incident.
According to the police spokesperson, the remaining two crew members, who were initially unconscious, were immediately evacuated to a hospital where they are currently receiving medical attention.
