FRSC Sensitises Jigawa Residents To Curb Road Crashes

The Jigawa State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified efforts to reduce road crashes across the state through public engagement.

This was disclosed by the Sector Commander, Mr. Umar Masa’udu, during a press briefing in Dutse on Tuesday to mark the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week, themed “Streets for Life; #MakeWalkingSafe #MakeCyclingSafe.”

Masa’udu said the annual event serves as a platform to promote global awareness about road safety and accident prevention, particularly for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.

“I wish to relate to you some of the critical road traffic management issues as well as the strategies we have put in place to ensure that our roads are always safe for all road users,” he stated.

The commander highlighted overloading, mixed loading, excessive speed, night travel, substance-impaired driving, and fatigue as the major contributors to road crashes in the state.

“Some of the challenging issues confronting the safety of road users plying our highways are overloading, mixed loading, speed, night trips, driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol as well as stress or fatigue,” Masa’udu said.

He said to tackle the issues, the command has launched aggressive sensitisation campaigns in motor parks, religious centres, markets, schools, and media platforms.

According to him, these efforts aim to instil safer road habits among drivers and commuters, especially through the Youth Safety Education (YSE) programme targeted at young people.

“To manage and mitigate these challenges, the corps has gone into aggressive sensitisation programmes in media, parks, religious centers, markets and schools.

“This is with a view to creating more awareness to younger ones under the Youth Safety Education (YSE) programme,” he noted.

Masa’udu added that beyond public awareness, the FRSC in Jigawa has implemented homegrown strategies to minimize road traffic incidents and enhance road discipline.

“The corps can only achieve a crash-free society when communities also play their part in making roads safer for all,” he said, and calling for greater cooperation from the motoring public.

He reassured residents that the command remains committed to entrenching sanity on all roads across the state, with ongoing measures designed to protect lives and prevent avoidable tragedies on highways.

The FRSC boss also stressed the importance of collective responsibility in achieving sustainable road safety in Jigawa and beyond.
