The Federal Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has reopened the slip road connecting the Goodluck Jonathan Expressway to Ring Road II at the Galadimawa Interchange, months after it was barricaded due to recurrent flooding.
The barricade, which was installed on July 1, 2025, was removed following the end of the rainy season and improved safety conditions along the corridor.
Speaking at the reopening on Tuesday, the Acting Director-General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, who was represented by the Head of Forecasting, Response and Mitigation, Mr. Mark Nyam, explained that the closure was necessary to prevent loss of lives, as the slip road had become prone to dangerous flooding each year.
According to him, the annual barricading exercise, though seemingly small, plays a critical role in safeguarding motorists while construction work aimed at permanently addressing the flooding challenge continues.
Also speaking, Abdulkadir Musa, Assistant Chief Resident Engineer with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), said the permanent solution being constructed along the axis is extensive and capital-intensive.
He noted that the presence of a bridge in the area makes the engineering work even more complex.
“The project is massive. Closing and reopening the slip road during the rainy season is only a temporary safety measure until the construction is fully completed,” Musa stated.
The Galadimawa axis has a history of tragic flooding incidents, including the 2019 flood that claimed the life of the Director of Finance at the FCT High Court, Mr Tony Okwechime.
The FEMD reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and ensuring that residents can use the reopened route safely.
