Gas Pipeline Vandalism Hits National Grid, Power Generation Drops

Electricity generation on Nigeria’s national grid has declined following gas supply constraints caused by an incident of gas pipeline vandalism, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has said.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NISO explained that the incident within the upstream gas supply network disrupted gas availability to several power generation facilities.

The development, it said led to reduced output from several gas-fired power stations and a drop in overall available generation capacity on the grid.

The system operator said it immediately activated established contingency measures to maintain grid stability and reliability.

These, according to NISO, included increased dispatch from available hydroelectric power plants, continuous generation re-dispatch, voltage control interventions and other operational actions aimed at balancing electricity supply with system demand.

It added that it is closely monitoring grid conditions, including system frequency and voltage levels, while working with relevant stakeholders to mitigate the impact of the gas supply disruption.

The operator noted that the development underscores the need for stronger coordination to address gas supply challenges, especially as the festive season approaches, a period traditionally sensitive for grid operations.

NISO assured electricity consumers nationwide of its commitment to proactive grid management and the application of appropriate operational standards to ensure a secure, stable and reliable power supply.

“The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) wishes to inform the general public and sector stakeholders that electricity generation on the National Grid has dropped due to gas supply constraints arising from the reported incident of gas pipeline vandalism within the upstream gas supply network.

“The incident affected gas availability to several power generation facilities.
Consequently, several gas-fired power stations recorded low output, which resulted in reduced available generation capacity on the National Grid.

“In response to the development, NISO promptly activated established contingency measures to maintain system stability and reliability.

“These measures included increased dispatch from available hydroelectric power stations, continuous generation re-dispatch, voltage control interventions, and other necessary operational actions to balance electricity supply with system demand.

“We are closely monitoring grid conditions, including system frequency and voltage profiles, while working with relevant stakeholders to mitigate the impact of the gas supply constraints.

“NISO wishes to assure the public of its commitment to proactive grid management and the application of appropriate operational standards to ensure a secure, stable, and reliable electricity supply nationwide”, the statement read.
