“Governor Possesses More Power; What She Did Was Very Disrespectful” — First Lady Remi’s Warning To Gov. Adeleke Sparks Outrage Over Protocol Breach

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, caused a major scene at a high-profile cultural event in Ile-Ife after publicly interrupting Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and threatening to switch off his microphone during his speech.

The confrontation, captured on video and now widely circulated on social media, has sparked outrage and renewed criticism over what many describe as an unacceptable breach of protocol and an overreach by the First Lady, who holds no constitutional authority.

The incident occurred on Sunday during the grand installation ceremony where the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, conferred the prestigious chieftaincy title of Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodu’a (Mother Leader of the Yoruba Race) on Senator Tinubu at the Ojaja Arena in Ile-Ife. The event was attended by top dignitaries including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Sultan of Sokoto and several governors.

Governor Adeleke, as the host of the state function, had taken the stage for a welcome address but soon drifted into an impromptu singing session, a trademark of his public appearances. His animated performance drew cheers from some attendees, but visibly irritated Senator Tinubu, who approached the podium to issue a stern warning.

In the viral clip, she is heard stating: “I give you 5 minutes to conclude your speech. Enough with the music, or I’ll switch off the microphone.” When Adeleke continued briefly, Tinubu returned moments later with an even firmer ultimatum: “I’m giving you 5 more minutes. The music is enough. I will turn off the microphone. Stop the music.”

The exchange, which lasted nearly a minute, visibly unsettled the audience and overshadowed the event’s proceedings.

The backlash online was immediate and intense. Many Nigerians condemned the First Lady’s conduct as disrespectful to an elected governor and wholly inconsistent with the boundaries of her unofficial role. “It’s beyond bizarre. How can you walk up to an ELECTED GOVERNOR and tell him you give him 5 minutes to leave the stage because he was singing? Just because you’re the wife of the President?” one viral post read.

Another commentator wrote: “In the scheme of things, the governor possesses more power than her. What she did was very disrespectful… The Governor is the host irrespective of political affiliation.”

The incident also revived long-standing discussions about the constitutionality of the First Lady’s influence. Legal commentators reiterated that Nigeria’s Constitution does not assign any formal powers or responsibilities to the office of the First Lady, making her intervention at an official state function even more contentious.

A few voices defended Tinubu, arguing that Adeleke’s extended singing was inappropriate given the profile of attendees. “We don’t respect time in this country… But Remi did not need to do that. She should have just left with her entourage,” one user posted, acknowledging poor timing but faulting the First Lady’s approach.
