Suspected armed bandits have abducted a woman and her infant along the Supare–Ayegunle road in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, sparking renewed concerns over security in the area.
The incident reportedly occurred as the nursing mother and her baby were heading to a nearby market.
According to the Nation, eyewitnesses said the assailants struck unexpectedly, creating panic among commuters and other road users.
Residents of Akoko have since expressed growing fear, noting that insecurity along rural roads in the area has worsened in recent times.
Reacting to the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Jimoh Abayomi, said the command was yet to fully verify the report.
He described the information available to the police as sketchy and assured that further details would be provided once confirmed.
“The information at my disposal is still very sketchy, and I can’t confirm it yet. I’ll revert once there’s enough information,” the publication quoted Abayomi as saying.
According to a close relative of the victims, who spoke anonymously, the abduction has plunged the family into distress.
The source confirmed that the woman’s husband, a furniture maker well known in Akungba-Akoko, has been appealing to security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of his wife and child.
The family also called on authorities to boost patrols and strengthen security along the Supare–Ayegunle road, which residents say has become increasingly notorious for kidnappings and attacks.
NEWSNGR reports that operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps, recently arrested 39 suspected terrorists who were hiding in a forest in the state.
The suspects were apprehended at the Elegbeka Forest in Ose Local Government Area during routine patrols by Amotekun operatives.
According to the Corps, the arrests followed intelligence gathered while operatives were tracking suspected kidnappers in the area.
The Ondo State Amotekun Commandant, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects, aged between 18 and 45, claimed to have fled from different parts of the North due to sustained airstrikes against terrorist groups.
On Thursday, the state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, directed intensified patrols across communities and forest areas, following the New Year’s eve attack on the Ipele police station in Owo Local Government Area.
