Hoodlums Attack Police Operatives During Arrest In Enugu

Suspected hoodlums have wounded some operatives of the Enugu State Police Command who had gone to effect their arrest at Akpakume community, Udi Local Government Area of the state.

This was disclosed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, in a release Tuesday night.

He explained that the operatives had gone to effect the arrest of the suspects in connection with a case of conspiracy and cultism when they were ambushed by hoodlums who opened fire on the police team, injuring some in the process.

“The suspects’ gunfire also shattered the light of the police operational vehicle and damaged other vehicles in the area,” Ndukwe added.

The incident, according to Ndukwe, happened on 3rd November 2025. He stated that the operatives had swiftly responded with superior firepower, forcing many of the criminal elements to flee with varying degrees of severe gunshot injuries.

Thirteen male suspects were arrested while one locally made single-barrelled gun was recovered, police said.

It was gathered that the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Bitrus Giwa, on Monday, led a team of senior officers to Akpakume community for an on-the-spot assessment of the damage caused by the suspects and others now on the run.

The PPRO explained that the hoodlums after the first incident further destroyed houses, shops, and other property, including crops and livestock belonging to members of the community.

According to him, preliminary investigation revealed that the criminal acts were in furtherance of an existing intra-communal crisis in the area.

CP Giwa, during the visit, urged law-abiding residents to remain calm and continue to go about their lawful businesses. He also charged the operatives to intensify the ongoing manhunt for the fleeing assailants, and assured that the command would stop at nothing to ensure that all those involved in the attack and other related criminal activities in the area were brought to justice.
