“I Have Not Filed For Divorce” — Nnamdi Kanu’s Wife Dismisses Reports As False, Urges Public To Rely Only On Verified Information

The wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, has denied reports claiming that she filed for divorce from her husband.

Okwu-Kanu, in a statement posted on her verified X handle on Friday, described the reports as false, unverified and misleading.

She said her attention had been drawn to claims circulating online that she had commenced divorce proceedings against Kanu, insisting that no such action had been taken.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” she wrote.

Okwu-Kanu expressed concern over what she described as the continued fabrication of stories about her family without proper verification.

According to her, such false reports undermine responsible journalism and mislead members of the public.

She urged the public to rely only on information coming directly from her or through her authorised representatives.

She also thanked those who reached out to confirm the report before sharing it further.

Kanu married Okwu-Kanu in 2009.

The IPOB leader is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre following his conviction on terrorism-related charges by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in November 2025.

He was found guilty on all seven counts preferred against him and sentenced to life imprisonment on five counts, 20 years on one count and five years on another, with the sentences to run concurrently.

Kanu has since challenged the judgment, filing a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal on February 4, 2026, seeking to overturn his conviction.

Okwu-Kanu’s denial comes amid renewed online speculation about her family and her husband’s legal battle.
