In a rare moment of political civility, President Bola Tinubu, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Ekiti State governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi shared a cordial exchange at the installation mass of Pope Leo XIV on Sunday in Rome.
The three Nigerian leaders, who were present as part of the global dignitary audience, drew attention when Fayemi approached President Tinubu—who was seated among other world leaders—and invited Obi to join him in greeting the Nigerian leader.
Breaking the ice, Fayemi said, “Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence.”
President Tinubu, smiling, responded, “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.”
The light-hearted remark drew laughter from Obi, who replied in agreement, “Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation.”
The exchange, though brief, was significant, especially given Nigeria’s tense political climate following the 2023 presidential elections. Obi, who contested against Tinubu in a highly disputed poll, is known for his sharp criticisms of the current administration.
Both Obi and Fayemi are devout Catholics and Papal Knights, which may have added a tone of unity to the encounter at the Vatican.
