…As Police Foil N10m Extortion Plot
A female student of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Chinecherem Nwaokoye, 28, has been arrested for staging her kidnap.
The Anambra State Police arrested Nwaokoye after a report of her suspected kidnapping was found to be staged.
A statement by the command on Monday said Nwaokoye’s family had reported a case of kidnapping on July 9, after she didn’t return home.
Nwaokoye contacted her family on July 8, informing them she was returning home from school.
However, her phone was turned off, and she never arrived.
The statement said, “On Wednesday, 9th July 2025, her family received a call from an unknown male voice who claimed responsibility for her kidnap and demanded a ransom of N10m.
“After negotiations, the ransom was reduced to N3m and a part payment of N1m was later paid into the victim’s bank account.”
The command said, its RRS operatives traced the suspects to a lodge at UNIZIK Temporary Site, Awka, where the supposed victim was found alive and in the company of her alleged accomplice, Aronu.
“Upon interrogation, the duo confessed to staging the kidnapping as a plot to extract money from the victim’s family.
“The female suspect, Chinecherem Nwaokoye, admitted she masterminded the plan after watching a movie and intended to give the money to her boyfriend to start a business,” the police said.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, described the case as “a troubling reflection of moral decay among some youth.”
He ordered that the suspects be taken to court immediately, warning that the command would not tolerate such acts of criminal deception.
“This is not just a crime, but a betrayal of family trust. We urge parents and guardians to be more vigilant about their children’s activities and the influences they are exposed to,” CP Orutugu said.
The Anambra Police further reaffirmed its commitment to deploying intelligence and proactive enforcement to ensure safety and justice for all residents.
