I’ll be happy to serve as Obi’s running mate — Kwankwaso

Former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed readiness to serve as running mate to Peter Obi if the opposition adopts Obi as its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.

Mr Kwankwaso made the declaration during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme while speaking on his recent political realignment.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that Kwankwaso and Obi contested the 2023 presidential election under the platforms of the New Nigeria Peoples Party and the Labour Party respectively.

The two politicians recently joined the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress before later aligning with the Nigerian Democratic Congress.

Speaking during the interview, Mr Kwankwaso said he and Mr Obi had agreed to work together to confront the country’s security challenges and restore peace and stability.

“Both of us, my humble self and Peter Obi, have agreed to tackle the issue of insecurity head-on to ensure there is peace and stability in this country,” he said.

When asked whether he would accept the position of vice-presidential candidate if Obi emerges as the party’s flag bearer, the former Kano governor answered in the affirmative.

“If the party decides that I should be the running mate of any candidate from the South under the circumstances, I’d be happy to work together with him,” Mr Kwankwaso stated.

He added that he believes their partnership would offer Nigerians a credible leadership alternative.

“Personally, I cannot remember any better combination, no matter how much time is given to find those who can beat us in terms of doing the right thing for this country,” he said.
