The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a global fundraising initiative to support the medical treatment and legal expenses of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021 following his re-arrest and return to Nigeria, is facing charges related to treasonable felony.
A statement issued on Tuesday signed by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful and made available to NEWSNGR said the move was aimed at ensuring adequate financial resources for Kanu’s ongoing health care and legal defence.
The group said, “For almost five years, our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been left to carry the heaviest cross alone.
“Apart from a few individuals who have quietly stood by him, there has been no organized fundraising or major contribution by the IPOB family worldwide to support his medical treatment, legal defence, or welfare,” the statement said.
He explained that the new effort was intended to coordinate financial support and ensure transparency in handling donations, noting that, “Many people have used his name and struggle to raise money, yet those funds never reached him. That must stop. The time has come for us to act responsibly and support his health and defence,” he said.
According to Powerful, Kanu personally endorsed the initiative and authorised its launch.
“This initiative has Onyendu’s full consent and blessing. He mandated me, as his official spokesperson, to make this appeal to every true member and supporter of IPOB to rise and contribute,” he added.
The statement cautioned supporters against unofficial fundraising drives, urging them to verify information through IPOB’s recognized communication channels.
“The public should be wary of fake accounts or misinformation intended to create confusion or discourage participation,” Powerful said in the statement.
