Kaduna Woman Refuses To Leave Matrimonial Home After Divorce

A determined Kaduna housewife, Latinate Sanusi, has told a Sharia Court in the Magajin Gari area of the city that she will not vacate her matrimonial home, despite the official end of her marriage.

Sanusi’s husband, Abdulrazak Yunusa, had approached the court seeking formal confirmation of an Islamic divorce he had pronounced three times and requested the court to compel his estranged wife to leave his residence.

However, in a passionate response, Sanusi told the court that she intends to remain in the home in order to personally raise their six daughters.

She expressed serious concern about entrusting the care of her children to others, stressing the need for maternal guidance—especially as all her children are girls.

“My children are all girls, and I want to be the one to take care of them. He hardly provides for them as it is,” Sanusi said.

“I can’t just leave them to be raised by strangers,” he added.

Sanusi also argued that the well-being and upbringing of her children remained her top priority, regardless of the dissolution of her marriage.

Yunusa, on his part, told the court that he ended the marriage due to his wife’s alleged lack of submission.

In his ruling on Monday, June 2, 2025, Presiding Judge Malam Kabir Muhammad confirmed the validity of the divorce, stating that the issue before the court was strictly about confirming the dissolution of the marriage. He advised Sanusi to file a separate case if she wishes to pursue custody of the children.

“The matter before me is for the confirmation of divorce. Custody matters should be brought before the court as a separate suit,” the judge ruled.
