The Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) has warned roadside traders against dumping refuse on roads and in drainage channels, saying the practice contributes to blocked waterways and environmental pollution.
The board’s Managing Director, Dr Muhammad Salisu-Khalil on Tuesday raised concerns about traders selling boiled and roasted maize along major roads, saying maize husks, cobs and other waste from their businesses were often dumped on roads and inside drainage channels.
It directed traders operating along France Road, Katsina Road, Maiduguri Road, Zaria Road and Zoo Road to provide waste bins and properly dispose of refuse generated from their activities.
The board said indiscriminate dumping was particularly problematic because waste left in drainage channels could obstruct the flow of water and worsen flooding risks.
It also expressed concern that some traders dispose of refuse at locations shortly after sanitation workers had cleared them.
REMASAB said it would continue to enforce environmental sanitation regulations and that offenders could face legal action, including prosecution before the environmental sanitation court.
The board stressed that the warning was not aimed at stopping roadside businesses but at ensuring that commercial activities do not create additional sanitation and environmental problems.
