The Kano State Government has reiterated its determination to earnestly pursue and fully utilise whatever is legitimately due to the state under the Federal Character principle.
The Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Umar Ibrahim, stated this on Thursday in Kano while receiving the report of the Technical Committee on Federal Character Application and Compliance set up by the state government.
According to a statement issued by the Press Secretary to the SSG, Musa Tanko-Muhammad, the committee is mandated to undertake a technical assessment of the application and compliance with the federal character principle as it affects Kano State.
He said the committee was headed by the former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Dr. Danyaro Ali-Yakasai.
Speaking shortly after receiving the report on behalf of the governor, the SSG commended the Chairman and members of the committee for what he described as painstaking, thorough, and selfless service to the state.
Mr Ibrahim said the report would ensure that the state received its rightful share of federal appointments, recruitments, opportunities, and other benefits accruing to it within the framework of the federal character principle.
He stressed that the government would not hesitate to act on the findings and recommendations contained in the report.
“What is due to Kano State shall be earnestly pursued and fully utilised,” he assured.
According to him, the significance of the committee’s assignment goes beyond the compilation of figures and records.
“It provides the state government with an evidence-based foundation upon which it can engage relevant federal institutions and pursue legitimate opportunities for the people of Kano,” he said.
The SSG noted that effective participation in the federal structure requires not only qualified and competent citizens.
“but also a deliberate mechanism for monitoring opportunities, representation, and compliance with established provisions governing equitable participation by the various states and sections of the country,” he said.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the committee, Dr. Ali Yakasai, expressed profound gratitude to Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf for the confidence reposed in him and the entire membership of the committee to undertake the important assignment.
He said the production of the comprehensive report was the collective effort of its members and the various stakeholders who contributed to the successful completion of the assignment.
He equally expressed appreciation to all stakeholders, government officials, and other functionaries who provided the committee with the necessary cooperation, information, and support throughout its work.
The report, he said, marks an important transition from the committee’s investigative and analytical responsibility to the implementation stage, “providing the government with a documented basis for identifying areas of opportunity, addressing gaps in representation, and engaging relevant federal authorities where necessary.”
“The initiative is particularly significant because the federal character principle is designed to promote fairness, inclusiveness, and a sense of belonging in the distribution of opportunities within Nigeria’s federal system,” he noted.
