The Kano State Government has approved N1.5 billion for its planned mass wedding programme, which will benefit 3,000 couples across the state.
The Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists on preparations for the exercise.
According to Daurawa, the fund will cover the purchase of furniture, food items, dowries, clothing materials and other logistics required for the programme. He added that each bride would also receive a capital grant of N100,000 to support the start of married life.
“The Kano State Government is to spend N1.5 billion on the entire mass wedding programme, which will soon be conducted in the state,” he said.
Daurawa explained that the Hisbah Board, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health, had commenced medical screening for prospective couples to determine their health status.
He said the screening includes tests for hepatitis, HIV, genotype, pregnancy and other sexually transmitted diseases.
According to him, more than 5,000 people applied for the scheme, but only 3,000 couples will be selected after the completion of the medical screening process.
The Commander-General commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for initiating the programme and said the governor would announce the official date for the mass wedding.
He recalled that the medical screening exercise began on May 8, 2026, with intending couples drawn from 24 of the state’s 44 local government areas.
