The Lagos State Government has revealed that a total of 8,692 cases of domestic and sexual violence were recorded between August 2024 and July 2025.
This was announced during a press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, held as part of activities marking the Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, observed every September.
Speaking at the event, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), represented by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Hameed Oyenuga, stated that domestic violence remained the most prevalent category, accounting for 3,685 of the reported cases.
According to him, the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) attended to more than 400 clients monthly through both physical walk-ins and its Virtual Referral and Response Service.
“Between August 2024 and July 2025, the DSVA received a total of 8,692 cases through both physical walk-ins and the Virtual Referral and Response Service.
“On average, the Agency attends to over 400 clients monthly,” Pedro said.
Pedro highlighted that the youngest survivor documented during the reporting period was just 18 months old, while the oldest was 79.
He reaffirmed the state’s zero-tolerance policy for sexual and gender-based violence and emphasised Lagos’s commitment to supporting survivors and prosecuting offenders.
Within the same timeframe, the state secured over 140 convictions and issued six restraining orders.
The breakdown of cases included incidents of defilement, child abuse, physical assault, rape, sexual harassment, and sexual assault by penetration.
Family-related disputes, cyber harassment, and threats to life were also among the issues reported.
The Attorney General further revealed that 3,090 children exposed to domestic violence received counselling services.
Additionally, 146 survivors were offered free legal representation, all sexual assault victims were provided with free medical care, and 30 individuals were given temporary shelter in government facilities.
The government also extended rehabilitation services, with 1,487 survivors and 249 perpetrators undergoing therapy, and 13 persons with disabilities receiving specialised support.
