A yet-to-be-identified driver has died in a lone accident that occurred late Saturday night, October 25, 2025, at the Alaka Under Bridge in the Surulere area of Lagos State.
It was gathered that the fatal crash happened around 11:45 p.m. and involved a navy blue Toyota Camry.
The vehicle, reportedly travelling at high speed inward Iponri, lost control and somersaulted multiple times before coming to a stop.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary investigations revealed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, which impaired his judgment and reaction time, leading to the fatal crash.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the driver, who was alone in the vehicle, died instantly.
Adebayo stated that members of the newly inaugurated LASTMA 24-hour Night Operations Squad, covering the Surulere axis, quickly arrived at the scene, secured the area to prevent further accidents, and contacted the police from the Bode Thomas Division.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the Navy Blue Toyota Camry, with registration number EKY 311 GK, was travelling at an excessively high velocity inward Iponri, when the driver lost control of the vehicle near the Alaka Under Bridge in Surulere. The vehicle somersaulted repeatedly, culminating in a fatal impact that claimed the driver’s life at the scene,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
“Members of the LASTMA 24 hours Night Duty Patrol Team, who were actively monitoring vehicular movement within the Surulere corridor at midnight, arrived expeditiously at the crash site, secured and cordoned off the affected area to prevent secondary incidents, and immediately alerted officers from the Bode Thomas Police Division.”
The police later conducted on-site documentation and released the deceased’s remains to his wife and family members, who were reached through his mobile phone recovered from the wreckage.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and described the incident as a tragic reminder of the fatal consequences of intoxicated driving.
He advised motorists to exercise caution and responsibility, especially during the Ember Months — a period known for increased vehicular movement and higher accident risks.
Bakare-Oki added that the fight against drunk driving was a major focus of the recently concluded LASTMA Ember Months Stakeholders’ Forum, themed “Safe Roads, Safe Lives… LASTMA Cares.”
He reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to promoting safety through strict enforcement, continuous public enlightenment, and stronger collaboration with other agencies to safeguard lives and ensure quick emergency response across Lagos roads.
NewsNGR reports that just a little above a week, one person was killed while several others sustained injuries following an accident that occurred at Obadore, inward Igando, along the LASU-Igando Road in Lagos.
It was gathered that the incident happened around 11 p.m. when a commercial Mazda bus, fully loaded with passengers, collided with a broken-down Private Sector Participant (PSP) compactor truck that had been abandoned on the road.
