NOSDRA Emerges Most Transparent Public Institution In Nigeria

The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has been ranked as Nigeria’s most transparent public institution in the 2025 Transparency and Integrity Index (TII) released by the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity (CeFTPI).

The report, which assessed 575 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) across the country, saw NOSDRA topping the list with a score of 78.84%.

The achievement is said to be a testament to the agency’s commitment to promoting accountability and public access to governance information.

Reacting to the development, NOSDRA’s Director-General, Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke praised the agency’s staff for embracing a culture of openness. “We are honoured to be recognised,” he said.

“Transparency is the foundation of trust and efficient service delivery. This recognition belongs to every staff member committed to these values.”

The assessment covered five key areas: financial transparency, procurement, human resources and inclusionntcontroll of corruption, and citizen engagement, each carrying 20% weight.

It was learned that the NOSDRA excelled in all the areas, demonstrating its commitment to transparent governance.

The Executive Director of CeFTPI, Umar Yakubu, noted that most MDAs are not meeting their legal obligations under the Fiscal Responsibility Act (2007), Freedom of Information Act (2011), and Public Procurement Act (2007).

He urged Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to align with the Open Government Partnership (OGP) and embed transparency into their daily operations.

The ranking of NOSDRA as the most transparent public institution in Nigeria sets a benchmark for other agencies to follow.

It also highlights the importance of transparency in governance and the need for public institutions to prioritize accountability and public access to information.
