The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka in Enugu State has announced the death of Rev Fr Ferdinand Abonyi.
The deceased, aged twenty-two, was the parish priest of St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Amogwu Aku, in the Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State before his death.
The death of Fr Abonyi was announced by the Principal Diocesan Secretary of the Diocese, Rev. Fr Cajetan Iyidiobi.
According to him, “The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka announces with profound sorrow the death of Rev Fr Ferdinand Abonyi, who died peacefully on August 26, 2025, at St Patrick’s Hospital, Enugu.”

Catholic Diocese of Nsukka added that the deceased had “dedicated his life to serving God and humanity with unwavering faith, humility, a gentle and calm spirit for the past 22 years.
“Fr Ferdinand’s remains were received by the Bishop of the Diocese, Most Rev Godfrey Onah, who led prayers for his peaceful repose before depositing him at Bishop Shanahan’s Mortuary as arrangements for his funeral rites commence,” the Commission stated.
It would be recalled that the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka recently lost one of its popular priests, Rev Fr John-Martin Chikeani. He was a former principal of Saint Theresa’s College, Nsukka.
