Pains Of Economic Reforms Temporary, Says Lagos APC

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has appealed to Nigerians to remain steadfast and hopeful amid current economic difficulties.

The party made the appeal in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, while commending the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) for patriotic leadership during its meeting held in Lagos from December 5 to 6.

The party praised the Forum, chaired by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and hosted by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for reaffirming their full support for President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying their stance came at a time when political opportunists were exploiting misinformation and public frustration.

The party noted that the governors based their decisions on facts, governance responsibility and the long-term interest of the country.

It added that their alignment with ongoing reforms, including food security, power, transportation, infrastructure development, enterprise support, social investment and national security, reflects a strong synergy between states and the Federal Government.

The Lagos APC also commended the PGF for placing citizens’ welfare at the centre of its deliberations.

It said the governors’ holistic review of the country’s political, economic and social conditions, as well as their commitment to uphold the dignity of all Nigerians—workers, entrepreneurs, youths, women, the elderly and vulnerable groups—was a reassuring indication that the social contract remains active under progressive governance.

The party described the Forum’s approach as leadership that listens and remains connected to the realities of everyday people.

“At a time when political opportunists thrive on misinformation and national pessimism, the Progressive Governors chose to anchor their engagement on facts, data, governance responsibility, and the long-term interest of Nigeria.

“Their endorsement of ongoing reforms in food security, power, transportation, infrastructure, enterprise support, social investment, and national security reflects deep strategic alignment between the states and the centre – a synergy that is absolutely critical for national recovery and sustainable growth,” the statement read.

“The Lagos APC particularly commends the Forum for placing citizens’ welfare at the heart of governance. The broad-based review of Nigeria’s political, economic, and social realities and the commitment to protect the dignity of Nigerians across all strata – workers, entrepreneurs, youth, women, the elderly, rural and urban dwellers alike – is a powerful reassurance that the social contract remains alive under progressive governance.”

Addressing the ongoing economic hardship, the Lagos APC praised the governors for their honesty in acknowledging the temporary pains associated with necessary macroeconomic reforms.

Rather than resorting to denial, it said, the governors recognised the sacrifices of Nigerians and resolved to deepen targeted interventions in food production, SME support, youth employment and social protection.

Their pledge to work closely with the Federal Government, the National Economic Council and local governments, the party added, reflects maturity and a shared sense of responsibility.

The statement described the PGF meeting as a defining moment in Nigeria’s national journey, saying it reaffirmed that progressivism in the country remains disciplined, result-driven and focused on nation-building.

The party emphasised that, while some political actors have chosen distraction and grandstanding, the Progressive Governors have opted for the more demanding task of reform and long-term development. It added that Lagos was once again proud to host a milestone event in Nigeria’s democratic and developmental history.

Urging Nigerians to draw confidence from the clarity and determination exhibited by the Progressive Governors, the Lagos APC said the current phase of reform, though challenging, is essential for achieving lasting prosperity.

“We urge Nigerians to take confidence in the clarity of purpose demonstrated by the Progressive Governors. The road of reform is never easy, but it is the only road that leads to lasting prosperity. The PGF has sent a loud and reassuring message: Nigeria is on course, the leadership is aligned, and the future remains deliberately hopeful.

“Once again, we salute the Progressive Governors for standing up to be counted at a time like this in our nation’s history,” the APC added.

NewsNGR reports that, in a communique signed by Uzodimma on Saturday, PGF reaffirmed its support for Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda after a two-day meeting in Lagos.

“We, the Progressive Governors, are committed to work closely with Federal institutions, the National Economic Council and Local Governments to ensure that things keep improving, that no group is left behind, and that the gains of reforms continue to translate into visible improvements in the quality of life of the people,” the communique read partly.
