PDP Reaping What It Sowed—APC On Defections

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the ongoing wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not a coincidence but the inevitable outcome of years of deceit, internal betrayal, and ideological bankruptcy within the opposition party.

Reacting to the PDP’s claim that defections would not affect its stability, Lagos APC spokesman Seye Oladejo stated that the opposition party was trying to downplay the implosion rocking its structure.

In a statement on Saturday, Oladejo said the mass exit of PDP members to the APC was a reflection of the growing confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which, according to him, was yielding fruit across critical sectors.

“What is happening to the PDP today is not mere political migration – it is the inevitable consequence of years of internal deceit, lack of ideology, and serial betrayal among its leaders. When a house is built on quicksand, it doesn’t take much for it to collapse,” Oladejo said.

He added that the PDP’s “so-called unity” was nothing more than a fragile alliance of opportunists united only by desperation for power.

The Lagos APC spokesman maintained that the opposition party’s relevance had drastically waned and advised it to conduct an honest post-mortem of its failures rather than issuing “hollow press statements”.

“The ongoing exodus from the PDP is only a confirmation that even its loyalists have lost faith in a party that has consistently failed to reform itself or offer a credible alternative to Nigerians,” he said.

“The Lagos APC wishes to remind the PDP that no amount of public posturing can mask the deep cracks within its fold. Its so-called unity is nothing but a fragile alliance of opportunists whose only common ground is desperation for power. The recent defection of key figures from the PDP to the APC is a testament to the growing confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which is already yielding measurable progress across critical sectors.

“At this point, the few remaining members of the PDP are perhaps the undertakers – staying behind only to perform the final rites and fittingly dispose of what remains of a once-dominant but now lifeless political carcass.”

Oladejo said the defections into the ruling party were endorsements of the APC’s commitment to national renewal and people-centred governance, adding that Nigerians had become wiser and could no longer be swayed by “deceitful” opposition politics.

“For the APC, these defections are not just political victories – they are endorsements of our party’s enduring commitment to national renewal and people-centred governance. The Nigerian people are speaking loudly, and the message is clear: the era of deceitful opposition politics is over,” he added.

However, the PDP has dismissed the defections as coerced and short-lived.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Debo Ologunagba, alleged on Thursday that the APC was using undemocratic means, including blackmail, inducement, and intimidation, to lure PDP governors and other members to its fold.

Ologunagba further accused the ruling party of attempting to decimate the opposition and entrench a one-party system in the country, but insisted that the PDP remained resilient and focused on rebuilding ahead of future elections.

“The defections you see today are instigated by inducement, harassment, coercion, intimidation, and I can assure that it won’t last,” he said.

“A party is not about individuals but all the people. We have more and more diverse people working for the PDP today. More and more people are returning to the PDP because it’s getting itself together.”
