Peter Obi, El-Rufai Meet In U.S. Amid Rising Opposition Coalition Talks

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai met on Sunday in the United States at the 11th Annual Cambridge Africa Together Conference (ATC), hosted at St. John’s College, University of Cambridge.

According to Sunday Telegraph, El-Rufai, one of the keynote speakers at the prestigious conference, was seen engaged in a lengthy and seemingly focused conversation with Obi. While details of their discussion remain private, the images and reports of the meeting have ignited speculation and debate across Nigeria’s political space.

The encounter comes at a critical time of heightened political realignment and opposition consolidation ahead of the 2027 general elections. El-Rufai, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has been linked with moves to build a strong opposition bloc in collaboration with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Peter Obi, known for his reformist rhetoric and growing national support base, has also continued to engage in high-level policy forums and strategic consultations, both locally and internationally.

The two leaders’ presence at the Cambridge Africa Together Conference—an annual gathering focused on leadership, innovation, and development in Africa—further underscored their ongoing interest in global discourse and national transformation.

Observers say the convergence of Obi, El-Rufai, and Atiku Abubakar in opposition circles could herald the emergence of a formidable coalition capable of challenging the dominance of the ruling APC in the next election cycle.

Although no official statement has been issued by either Obi or El-Rufai regarding their meeting, analysts view the development as part of broader consultations to unify Nigeria’s fragmented opposition. “This meeting, even if informal, suggests that key opposition figures are actively exploring common ground,” said a political commentator on Sunday.

The buzz generated by the viral photos of the duo in conversation reflects rising public interest in the future of Nigeria’s opposition and the potential configurations heading into 2027.
