The Kebbi State Police Command has clarified that the explosion that rocked the General Hospital in Bagudo in the early hours of Tuesday was caused by a fire outbreak that overheated gas cylinders at the facility.
The incident, which triggered panic among residents of the area, recorded zero casualties.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, the command explained that “The explosion was caused by an inferno which overheated air-conditioning and refrigerator gas cylinders, resulting in the loud explosions observed.”
He further noted that thorough investigations and technical assessments ruled out the involvement of explosives or aerial operations.
“Investigations and expert assessments have confirmed that the incident was caused by an inferno. No explosives or aerial activity were involved,” he stated.
According to him, assessments conducted by Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) experts, in collaboration with the Commissioner of Police Tactical Team, corroborated the findings.
“Assessments conducted by EOD-CBRN experts, alongside the Commissioner of Police Tactical Team, confirmed that no explosives or aerial activity were involved,” Usman added.
He also assured the public that there were no fatalities or injuries arising from the incident.
“No loss of life or injuries occurred, as verified by the on-site expert teams,” he said.
The Police Command urged members of the public and the media to disregard unverified reports suggesting bomb explosions or helicopter involvement, advising them to rely only on official sources for accurate information.
“We advise everyone to rely solely on official information. The situation remains fully under control, and the Command remains committed to public safety and transparency,” Usman stated.
While the explosion initially caused confusion and fear, the police emphasised that the incident was accidental and involved no criminal activity.
Security agencies were promptly deployed to the scene and secured the area to prevent any further threats.
