The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 62-year-old man accused of running an extortion ring for a secessionist group in the Ihiala Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Bernard Odinchefu, was picked up by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, on October 1.
Police said he acted as an informant and allegedly coordinated the collection of illegal levies from residents.
According to preliminary findings, Odinchefu demanded at least N10,000 monthly from traders in Isseke and Orsumoghu communities.
Families planning burials were reportedly forced to pay N100,000 or more before holding ceremonies.
Police alleged that the money was remitted to his commander in a terrorist camp.
“The suspect is in custody and further investigation is ongoing,” Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said in a statement on Thursday.
The State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, vowed to dismantle such criminal structures.
“This arrest is part of ongoing efforts to rid the state of elements exploiting innocent citizens under the guise of agitation,” he said.
