The Abia State Police Command has arrested three elderly suspected gun runners and recovered a cache of firearms during a targeted intelligence led operation in Obingwa Local Government Area.
The Command in a statement signed by DSP Maureen Chinaka, Police public relations officer on Thursday revealed the identities of the suspects to include Nworu John (65), Chikezie Ubani (65), and Collins Ukandu (55).
According to DSP Chinaka, they were apprehended in the early hours of Thursday, 11 December 2025, following credible intelligence that led operatives to their hideout.
She explained that the operation led to the recovery of seven firearms, including: Two automatic pump-action guns, three locally made double-barrel guns, one single-barrel pump-action gun, one locally fabricated six-round revolver, and four live cartridges.
The police spokesperson added that the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation as investigations continue to uncover more details about the alleged gun-running network.
She noted that several arms have been recovered in recent weeks, with many suspects already arraigned and prosecuted as part of ongoing security operations across the state.
The statement further reaffirmed the Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, commitment to ensuring the safety of residents before, during, and after the Yuletide season and assured that covert and overt operations will continue to maintain peace and protect lives and property across the state.
The Police Command however urged citizens to remain security-conscious and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency hotlines.
