The Rivers State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists, including a police corporal, and recovered firearms and other incriminating exhibits in a daring operation at the University of Port Harcourt.
The suspects, identified as Corporal Onwukwe Godswill, attached to the Elimgbu Division, and Ifeanyi Israel, a 200-level Biomedical Technology student of the University, were arrested on
September 26, 2025, during a confrontation with the university’s internal security team.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the suspects were preparing for a clash with rival cultists on campus when they were apprehended.
Iringe-Koko said a thorough search of the suspects yielded the following exhibits: Two locally made pistols; Four rounds of live cartridges; Two rounds of 9mm live ammunition and One small axe.
She added that a subsequent search of the house of the suspected cult leader, Corporal Onwukwe, resulted in the recovery of additional exhibits, including:
One locally made pistol and Two machetes.
She added that the suspects and exhibits are currently in police custody, and an in-depth investigation has been launched to determine the full extent of their involvement in cultism and other related activities.
She said: “The police command is working diligently to unravel any potential networks or accomplices and bring all perpetrators to face the full weight of the law.”
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju has said: “We are committed to maintaining peace and security in the state, and we will not tolerate any form of cultism or criminal activity.”
CP Adepoju reaffirmed the command’s unrelenting commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state, stating that there will be no hiding place for criminals in the state.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or other security agencies.
“Collaborative efforts will help build a safer and more secure state for all,” he said. “We urge members of the public to report any information that could aid in our investigation.”
