Police operatives in Anambra State, in collaboration with local vigilantes, have raided a militant camp in Orumba North, killing four suspects and rescuing a kidnap victim.
The camp, located at Awa community, was raided by officers of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, alongside the Anambra State vigilante group.
The police said the operation, which lasted over 15 hours on August 21, followed credible intelligence.
The rescued victim had earlier been abducted despite his family paying N20m ransom. The gunmen refused to release him until security forces intervened.
“In the fierce gun battle that ensued, four of the criminal elements were neutralized,” police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said in a statement on Friday.
Arms and other items recovered include two pump-action guns, a fabricated AK-47 rifle, a K2 assault rifle, improvised explosive devices, communication gadgets, and vehicles including a black Lexus RX 350 Jeep and three Toyota Camry cars.
Also seized were mobile phones, food items, identity cards, sleeping materials, and a roll of tarpaulin believed to be used by the suspects in their camp.
The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, said the command will sustain operations against armed groups in the state.
“We remain resolute in our commitment to ensuring safety and security. Extensive operations are ongoing to track down fleeing suspects and destroy other criminal camps,” he assured.
