PSC To Monitor Police Officers Conduct DuringAnambra Election

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has deployed staff across the three senatorial districts of Anambra State to observe police conduct during Saturday’s governorship election.

The Commission said its monitoring teams will operate from the state capital, Awka, and within Anambra North, Central, and South zones to ensure that police officers adhere strictly to electoral guidelines.

PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd.), on Tuesday directed all police personnel on election duty to maintain high levels of impartiality and professionalism.

He stated that the Commission has established special surveillance mechanisms to monitor their conduct, warning that any officer found to be compromising election integrity would face disciplinary sanctions.

“Police Officers must ensure that both the electoral officers and the electoral materials are protected. Police men on election duty must ensure that a conducive environment is created for the people of Anambra State to vote without let or hindrance.

“Officers who compromise their rules of engagement will be sanctioned,” the PSC Head of Press and Public Relations, Mr Ikechukwu Ani, quoted Argungu as saying.

Argungu added that the November 8 election would serve as a performance test for the Nigeria Police Force ahead of the 2027 General Elections, urging officers to demonstrate commitment to democratic values through impartial and transparent conduct.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had earlier unveiled a detailed security framework for the Anambra governorship election.

The arrangement includes strict movement restrictions, neutrality enforcement for security personnel, and directives against unauthorised security formations or escorts.

Egbetokun assured that the police were fully prepared to safeguard lives, electoral materials, and officials to ensure the election “unfolds under an atmosphere of absolute security, fairness, and public confidence.”

In line with the new directive, Commissioner of Police Abayomi Shogunle has been deployed to lead security operations in the state, coordinating inter-agency collaboration and supervising field activities across all 21 local government areas to maintain order throughout the election period.
